Audrey Sage said that sometime during the past day "a librarian" at one of the service desks told a patron that they could go directly to Preservation Services to ask for the copy of Native Son that was being repaired. Audrey requests that we call her to check on the status of the book before telling the patron anything. In most cases she needs 24 hours notice to rush a repair job. In this case, the book was so damaged that it had already been sent out of the building for rebinding.
As a reminder, books that are "in process" may be somewhere in Acq or Cat and could possibly be rush processed, but don't promise the patron quick results. Staff there should be contacted to see if they can locate the book and give you a sense of when the book might become available.
