NUR 210 cultural competence, transcultural nursing and health care

You've probably already noticed that it's NUR 210 time again. Remember there's a libguide.

(FYI, there are MULTIPLE nursing and health science courses with transcultural health care and cultural competence assignments - get the course number look for a libguide in case the course instructor has shared info w/me).

Here's the NUR 210 backstory.

Pre-nursing sophomores are being asked to work as a group on a presentation, skit, etc. on the health status, health care, health practices, culture and customs of an assigned cultural group. Also as individuals each student writes a 2-3 pp paper about his/her assigned cultural group related to health care, health practices, etc.

Cultural groups are:
  • Chinese Americans
  • Vietnamese Americans
  • Afghan Americans
  • Hispanic Americans
  • Appalachians
Students are asked to find at least 3 sources, one of which must be an article from a nursing journal.  All sources should have been published in the most recent 5 years.

There are 7 sections of this course and different instructors apply these instructions differently.

Some instructors allow students to use older sources for the cultural information, but clinical/medical procedures must always be from the most recent five years.  Some instructors encourage students to look at the region of origin for cultural information as well as the US, which helps in finding more sources.

Hopefully each student knows the requirements of his/her instructor.  Six sections of students had a library talk with an introduction to searching for broad and interdisciplinary sources plus nursing articles. Including basic search strategies, with practice time in assigned groups.  I made of point of asking instructors about using older cultural information and got some pretty strong reactions.  But no, I personally do not remember the preferences in every single section.

The seventh section was scheduled to meet on Labor Day so the coordinator encourage students in that section to sit in on other library talks. Some of those students did so.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thanks,
Lea
