Ebsco mobile apps for iPhone and Android

In case you haven't heard, Ebsco has mobile applications for iPhone and Android devices. When I played with it at home, I was able to search our ebschohost dbs and didn't even need to log in (I was told that I'd been given a "nine month key"). It worked very nicely, including "settings" to choose databases and limit to FT, though I did not see a way to get into the full text of ebooks.

Getting and activating the app -
1) Open any ebsco database, scroll to the bottom of the page
2) Click on the link "ebscohost for iPhone and Android" to email an access key to yourself
3) Download the free ebsco app from whichever source you usually use for apps - iTunes if you have an iPhone or Android Market if you use an Android device.
4) Once you have the app, open your email on your device and finish following the instructions (for me there was one button to press)

Web Printing and Color printing

Anyone can print via the web to any of the campus labs and to the color printer in the Superlab.  See the ITS webpage for more info: http://its.uncg.edu/printing/

Course Compass

There is a web interface used by some classes called "Course Compass." It's a bit like blackboard, but it is not supported by our library's IT. If a student needs to open an e-book, they need to go to the "solve problems" section and navigate from there to the other pages. There is no way on library computers to directly download the e-book.

Chat Service Changes

Our Plugoo widget that shows on the Ask Us page has died. There is no problem with either the IM accounts or the aggregators (Digsby, Pidgin, etc.). The Plugoo widget has been replaced with a Meebo Widget, and will require using Meebo as the chat aggregator. For those that have not used our Meebo account, this is completely web based and the only software installed on the computer is the Meebo Notifier that appears in the tray as an icon ( show at left). The notifier is now installed on both stations at the desk.

How to use:

• The notifier will load automatically when the workstation starts, but will not login to Meebo. The icon will be greyed out.
  
• To login, double click on the icon. A pop window will tell you
  
• The notifier will show a popup window when there is a new chat message. The desk computers are configured to keep this window open until clicked on.
• If you double click on the popup (or the Meebo icon) the website will open in the browser.
• When you reply to the chat questions the popup(s) will disappear.
• Then you chat as you would on Digsby or other program.
