Moving from Web of Science to Scopus

Quick fyi for interns and other ref deskers who haven't seen the emails flying around to liaison librarians, faculty library reps, and dept heads outside the library...

We're moving from Web of Science (subscription expires June 30th) to  Scopus (should have access in a week).

Scopus indexes twice as many titles as Web of Science, and includes over 99% of the titles that are indexed by the Web of Science.

Journal Citation Reports will expire with Web of Science, but many faculty currently use Google Scholar and Eigenfactor for citation analysis.

We plan to create a research guide for assistance with these sources.  We also plan to create a guide to Scopus and will offer training as needed.  If you have questions or concerns, please contact your liaison librarian.

BIO 302 - return of the Web of Science assignment!

Hi all,

Four sections of an ecology lab are being asked to use Web of Science to find this article.  They are given publication info for one of the sources used by Wise et al and are supposed to follow a "times cited" link from that source to find Wise's article.

There's a BIO 302 libguide that explains how to take these steps.

Here are the instructions for the library-searching part of the assignment:

Your first challenge is to find the paper needed to complete the worksheet. Using web of science, search for a paper authored by Wise.  There is one other coauthor, but I am not giving you that information.  I will tell you that Wise and his coauthor cited the following article in their paper:

Kaitaniemi, P., H. Vehviläinen, and K. Ruohomäki. 2004. Movement and disappearance of mountain birch defoliators are influenced by the interactive effects of plant architecture and induced resistance. Ecological Entomology 29:437-446

That should be all the help that you need! Find and print a copy of the paper by Wise and his coauthor. Use this paper to answer the following questions.

All four sections are getting a library talk that includes the steps that should be taken to complete this assignment.

Web of Science, BIO 302

BIO 302 are back, with the famous Web of Science assignment.

The wording of the assignment is tricky.  The students need to use Web of Science to find this article:

Kaitaniemi, P., H. Vehviläinen, and K. Ruohomäki. 2004. Movement and disappearance of mountain birch defoliators are influenced by the interactive effects of plant architecture and induced resistance. Ecological Entomology 29:437-446

Then,  under the record, they need to click on "times cited (16)" to get to the list of later articles citing Kaitaniemi et al.

They need to find the article written by Wise AND ONE OTHER PERSON that cites
Kaitaniemi, and get the full text.

Big hint...this is the article they're supposed to find:

BIO 302 Web of Science article

4 sections of BIO 302 students have been asked to get into Web of Science to find:

Just put Kaitaniemi's article title into a quick WoS search then click on the times cited link below the Kaitaniemi article.

Yes there's a BIO 302 libguide but this is quicker.

Web of Science now points to the A to Z ejournals list

In case you haven't come across recent posts in Terry's blog http://uncgworldcatlocal.blogspot.com

Results in the Web of Science database now have a UNCG symbol that takes users into the A to Z ejournals list, not into journal finder.

This means more libguides updates for some of us :)

Please report any problems with journal linking to Beth Bernhardt.
