Accessing PowerScan for Microfiche Reader

 Hello all,

 Patrons have had some trouble lately accessing the PowerScan 3500 application that runs the microfiche reader in ROI. I believe that ERIT is going to do a few things to make the app more obvious, but in the mean time you will want to inform patrons looking to use the microfiche reader that they'll need to find the PowerScan app within the Windows start menu

To access the start menu after you've logged-in to the computer, either click the windows icon on the far left side of the task bar, or press the windows key on the keyboard (the one between the Fn and Alt key on the left side).

 It should bring up a menu that looks like the one pictured below:

From there, either type "PowerScan 3500" in the search bar, or click the All button and scroll down until you find the program's listing.

When you launch the app, you'll likely receive an error message that mentions an invalid license. Click the OK button, and the app should launch normally after a few seconds.

HIS 430 class project

A HIS class will be doing a microfilm scanning project again this semester. We will keep the microfilm they need in a basket at the reference desk until mid-February. The students will be told to pick up their reel from the basket, so they will ask for help about this. Also, I am training the students on using the equipment, but they may need reminders. Please help them as possible. If you run into questions, please ask me. Jenny, can you send this to the interns? I don't think I have contact info for the new ones.

Microfilm shifting

The film is the basement is currently being shifted which should be completed sometime next week. We have not yet relabelled drawers so it might be temporarily a little difficult to find film, but check with Mary or Liane.

Assignment for microfilm

FYI - see below, I did check with her and they are NOT permitted to use electronic versions of the papers. The film is in the process of being shifted. They should have several options and catalog records should be up to date for rolls of film that are missing or in storage. Mary

I wanted to contact the REF dept. because I have just given a microfilm assignment to our 7th graders and just in case some show up to Jackson Library you have a heads up.

They are using microfilm to research the month, day, and year their Mom/Dad/Grandparent turned the year they are now, either 12 or 13 and get print out examples from a newspaper of their choice of headlines, advertisements, fashions, culture, sports, etc. for a poster display. I would much appreciate any assistance your staff can give these students.
