Online book renewal to be suspended some time soon, until June

Hi all,

Joe Williams, head of Access Services, has let me know that Access Services will be suspending some book services temporarily.  He plans to post more info in the "Behind the stacks" portal tomorrow.

Book renewals -  At some point soon (when?? that info is not available) ONLINE book renewals won't be possible. Patrons can call access services or visit in person (with or w/out books) to renew during this period.  Which should end when WMS/the new catalog back end goes live (possibly June 6th).

New books display (reading room) discontinued

Hi all,

Terry, our brave catalog/ILS guru, just let me know that the new books display in the Reading Room is being discontinued due to the migration.

Cataloging is pulling books now and reintegrating into the rest of the book collection.  As they do that, the location info for the books will be updated in the catalog.

After the migration (after June), it's possible that the new book display will be started again.

WorldCat Local Libguides

Hi all,

Keep in mind that we have libguides for the new catalog

WorldCat Local for Library Staff is a private guide, meaning you need to know this URL in order to get it it: http://uncg.libguides.com/worldcat

It has links to Terry's blog on search interface and now also to his blog on Worldshare Management, the back end/staff side of the catalog that we'll be adopting in spring 2013.

WorldCat Local/New Search is intended for patrons - you can find it by searching all of our libguides for the term worldcat.

Print journals are in the new catalog! Journal title changes? Not so much.

The A to Z Journals list in the red search box is still the official place to search for ONLINE journals by title.

But the new WorldCat Local catalog now shows the volumes, years and call numbers for our print/microfilm/physical journals/magazines/newspapers/serials.

For example:  The Journal of the American Dietetic Association - click INTO the title then scroll down the worldcat record. Below the links into online access, under find a copy, you'll see volumes, years, and call numbers for the print version.

BUT if you're a hard-core library researcher, you might wonder why UNCG, which boasts an awesome nutrition dept with many vibrant programs, has no current issues of the flagship publication Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

This journal has CHANGED NAMES.  The new catalog and journals linking system don't know about journal title changes.

So if you're not finding a journal or newspaper or magazine that you've searched by title in the new systems, please consider the possibility that it has changed names. Those pesky serials do that a lot. A whole lot.  Wow, the changes that do happen with serials titles.

A happy ending: we do have current access to the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (used to be the Journal of the American Dietetic Association)

WorldCat Local updates - audiobooks, paperbacks, leased books, GVRL

For anyone who hasn't taken a recent look at Terry's WorldCat Local updates blog: http://uncgworldcatlocalblogspot.com

1. These collections now appear in WorldCat Local: audiobooks (example: The Big Burn) and paperbacks (example: The Cat Who Talked Turkey), and leased books

2. Gale Virtual Reference Library e-books - "View now" link under the brief record leads to an error message "there was a problem processing your request"

• Beth B is working on a fix, no timeframe on that
• When I click into a detailed WorldCat Local record (Countries and Their Cultures), I see a full text link: library.uncg.edu that leads into the e-book 

Things to keep in mind:

• Individual records in WorldCat Local do NOT summarize our holdings for that title - if you want to find out if we have a different year, format (e-book vs. print), or edition, choose "editions" then sort by library
• Years listed in the sidebar - start with the MOST NUMEROUS results not the most recent year - choose "show more" to see more years or for a range of years start at the advanced search

This post describes different systems for figuring out which journals, magazines, etc. we own.  At least some of this should be addressed during Terry's update at the all personnel meeting tomorrow (Thurs. 8/16/12). Info subject to change, keep an eye on Terry's blog.

Journal Finder = the list of print, microfilm, and e-journals that we're moving away from.

• We'll have access until 2013 (Terry, 8/14/12). 
• JF link is on the home page for the time being and also under "help with research" (bottom of the research box).  The LWAC committee (Richard, Kimberly, Amy) which in charge of library web page links will "reevaluate (having JF on the home page) as the print journals in WC unfolds." Yes that could be mid-semester!
•  E-journal links and dates - WT Cox is updating links and dates of coverage for titles in collections (Sage, Springer, aggregators like Academic Search Complete). But we have lots of e-journal subscriptions that are not in collections like these!  Beth B. will consider high priority updates but her primary responsibilities are shifting over the the OCLC systems for e-journals and e-books.
• Print, microform journal holdings - Katherine N. is updating these in JF.

Lea's opinion - JF can continue to be used with reasonable confidence. For myself, I plan to start with the A to Z list of ejournals UNLESS the patron specifically asks if we have a print subscription. In that case, I'll start in Journal Finder.

The old (Sirsi/Dynix) catalog also has up to date information on print and online journal holdings (titles, dates, volumes and issues owned). This could be a single search spot for journal info for a librarian, but I wouldn't suggest trying to teach it to patrons.

A to Z Journal List = a list of E-journals, meant to replace Journal Finder  but still being populated

• Doesn't yet include print journal holdings. No estimate for when that will happen, could be mid-semester, could be later.
• Linked on library home page in red search box.
• Some journals still show the wrong years of coverage - if you notice one, librarians/permanent library personnel should contact Beth B. Ref interns should probably report to the nearest librarian.

Lea's opinion - Looks different from Journal Finder but that doesn't make it a bad system. Think of it as an E-journals/newspapers/magazines list.  If someone wants to find out if we have a print or microfilm subscription, use JF or the old catalog for now.

Database links. The Open URL Resolver is part of the Journal Finder replacement. It takes you from "check for full text" links in library databases into WorldCat and the Knowledgebase (takes you to full text for the online stuff that we've told OCLC that we own).

Some databases ALREADY point into WorldCat instead of Journal Finder when you click on check for full text (Beth B, 8/15/2012):

• All EBSCO databases
• All Proquest Databases
• All Infotrac Databases

"The only other (database) that needs to be fixed is Web of Science" (BB, 8/15/12). Beth B. is working with the Web of Science vendor to get check for full text links pointing towards WorldCat.  No estimate.

Catalog work around

The catalog went down again tonight. You can use WorldCat local/express/whatever it is called to find the complete call numbers. You can also limit your search to UNCG and books. Here is the direct link: https://library.uncg.edu/dbs/auth/go.asp?vdbID=172

WorldCat Compatibility Issues on Mac

The new OCLC WorldCat search engines are compatible with all systems with the exception of Firefox 2 on a Mac. Mac users are unable to type anything in the search boxes.
If a patron has trouble with using WorldCat, ERIT suggests they upgrade to Firefox 3 or use Safari.
