Safety info from May 15 meeting

Hi, all, here is a quick summary from the safety lecture May 15 that Nick and I attended.  If you have any questions, check with either of us.

patron behaviors -  training is being planned for the fall for  with student workers on dealing with problem behaviors, with additional sessions planned for staff
Iibrary locks are currently on a timer, can't be opened until time for staff to get into the building, an hour before official opening

active shooter film is on police website  http://police.uncg.edu/Programs/ so you can watch online , will be shown again here in Jackson at some point - I saw it a couple of years ago, and thought it was very good

phones in Tower will be removed since they really don't help

bushes around building will be trimmed back to avoid providing hiding places

safety inspection soon - stacks are not currently in compliance - problems to look for piggy backed power strips, materials too close to ceiling, flammable materials on walls, egress pathways not clear, electric plates open or missing

make sure you are signed up for Emergency notification system (the one that sends emails and texts about emergency situations, can be done thru Genie)

LibGuide  is being developed, will replace print sources for disaster preparedness, has detailed maps for exits,fire extinguishers

areas of rescue assistance in stairwells - red button gives direct call to the police,  for people in wheelchairs for priority rescue in an emergency situation, there is a speaker which you can use for emergency situations where you don't have immediate access to a phone, if the button is pushed the police will come, even if no response


police chief visited to tell us about new app to be rolled out with SOAR, but you can download now in test mode - Nick has it and I also installed on my phone.  Livesafe app  would allow you to transmit pictures, etc.  will allow reporting incidents to police via cell phone, all sorts of cool features such as inviting someone to view you walking to your car, there will be a campus wide email when it is live - it's free to all UNCG, 
locator app should it be activated, can use to request safety escort

Severe weather signs

3 Severe Weather Shelter Area signs in highly visible, high traffic areas:

1 beside the Tower elevators on first floor;
1 in stairwell 180, on the landing between 1st floor (near the Superlab entrance) and the Basement;
1 beside the Staff Lounge door in the Basement.

In the event of a severe weather emergency, building occupants should make their way to the nearest of these shelter areas if there is time. If there is no time, occupants should seek the nearest sheltered spot available, away from windows and exterior walls. Some additional shelter area signs will be posted by Libraries staff in the Tower floors and Jackson Main in the coming weeks.
