Streaming videos

If a faculty member chats in about making films available for their classes, we should refer them to Cathy Rothermel, (carother@uncg.edu) who is in charge of the Instructional Film Collection. If the faculty is looking to see if a particular film is available to stream we can check the catalog. In most cases our streaming subscriptions should all be in there, you won't need to search the collection individually. One exception to this is Digital Campus (via Swank Motion Pictures.)

The link in the databases list takes you to a form for requesting films. This is for faculty only. There is a small link near the top that will allow you to search the Swank Motion Pictures database to see if a film is available. These films will not show up in our catalog, even though they are available to faculty members.

When in doubt, just refer them to Cathy Rothermel. Thank you!

New Streaming Database

We have access to a new streaming films database called Feature Films for Education.  It can be located here:

https://library.uncg.edu/dbs/auth/go.aspx?vdbID=1402.

This collection contains feature films from 20th Century Fox, both current and classics, that faculty and students can watch streaming from their computer or link to or embed in their Canvas class.  This is the first time these films have been available to libraries streaming.  Faculty and students do not need to do anything other than go to the above website, browse films by subject or search for a specific film and then hit play.  Most films have closed captioning available in English as well.

Eventually these titles will show up in the catalog with links to FFE but for now you will need to go to the database directly.

Minor change to streaming media database

What used to be listed under the Databases as Swank Motion Pictures is now Digital Campus (via Swank Motion Pictures). This streaming video database is different from others because it's really only for professors to use and request materials for a class. Students should not need to access it to view videos, these should already be loaded into Canvas. If a professor has a question about Swank Motion Pictures, we can just direct them to Digital Campus. The request form they need to fill out is on the library site, not on the Digital Campus site, and it is linked from the Streaming Media Libguide.

PBS streaming video being pulled

 Streaming Video - in case we get questions about videos people have used in the past:  a lot of titles are being pulled from the PBS Video Collection in the A-Z list and  on the Libguide for video.  Titles  will be pulled from the American History in Video collection. PBS has lost the rights to distribute these titles. Direct Cinema has also lost their rights.

both of these are experiencing problems - extremely slow access of five minutes or more for a video to load, if it loads at all. It's been reported to Alexander street and they are working on it.
