EndNote and Chat

Since we've trained a lot of people on EndNote, we may start getting more chats. As with any question, if you don't think you have the expertise to answer a question, either transfer it to someone on chat OR get the person's email address or phone and make sure someone contacts them. the same thing would apply to phone and in person. Most of the liaisons have been offering workshops on EndNote this week and Michael is also trained.

No EndNote commands in MS Word

Microsoft Word does not have EndNote commands on the "public" ad/gcn log in machines - computers in ITS labs, patron log in machines in the ref room and in the reading room, all citi lab machines, etc.

Also, the new security prevents users from installing EndNote Web commands inside MS Word on these machines.

Therefore - anyone who wants to use EndNote or EndNote Web to write a paper on those computers is currently SOL.

ITS knows about this and is investigating a temporary workaround and considering the computer image for the spring. There are tech problems but also policy problems. One unit on campus let ITS know that the EndNote commands in Word were interfering with online tests for their students (resulted in marking answers incorrect).

ERIT also has been notified. We don't know whether ERIT support will be able to fix this in the library, since they're now much more limited in how they can set up the log in computers.

Notifications have been posted on the EndNote Deskop libguide and copied from there to the EndNote Web libguide (welcome tabs and CWYW tabs).

EndNote X3 available on campus network

EndNote X3 is now available on the campus network! There are several changes in this version of EndNote, but the most significant new feature is integration with more word processing applications. EndNote is still integrated with MS Word for Windows. EndNote X3 is also integrated with:

• Apple®Pages ’09 - for instructions, download the EndNote X3 Mac User Guide
• OpenOffice.org Writer 3 for Windows - for instructions, download the EndNote X3 Win User Guide

And coming later this semester...EndNote X4 will be available!

EndNote support & product improvement

Hi all,

Please note that there is now an internal EndNote queue in libraryh3lp to help chatting library staff who have not used this product. The following library staff have awesomely agreed to staff the queue when they are available for libraryh3lp work: Lea, Steve, Lynda, Michael, and Hannah.

As usual, you can also provide a traditional referral to Lea or others listed on the EndNote Support page: http://library.uncg.edu/depts/ref/endnote/support.asp. Steve is taking the lead in answering EndNote questions when I go on maternity leave from mid-March through April 2010. The support page will be updated with this info closer to zero hour.

EndNote Web product improvement - it's just been fixed to allow users to directly insert citations from "Groups" (folders) that have been shared to their EndNote Web account.

Previously, an EndNote Web buddy would have to go into EndNote Web, inside a "Group" being shared with him/her, and COPY those references into his/her main EndNote library in order to use them in a Word doc.

EndNote Web now works with APA 6th edition

Sort of.

Your journal article records in EndNote must have either a DOI or a URL that is acceptable to APA 6th edition style.

Also your EndNote records must be set to the correct reference type. There's a misleading summary here: http://endnote.com/support/enapa6thstyle.asp If your article has a DOI, you can leave reference type set to journal article. If you have a URL instead of a DOI, you should set reference type to electronic article.

I've updated the extremely brief local page on EndNote and MS Word to reflect this information and have quietly uttered my weekly curse in the general direction of APA.

APA 6th edition update for EndNote X2

Thomson has released an installation package that updates EndNote X2 for use with APA 6th edition style. There is no update for EndNote Web.

It'd be nice if Thomson could update EndNote Web for APA 6th before 2010, which is when APA advises that the 6th edition changes will take effect, but Thomson isn't giving any clues as to whether this will happen.
