Update on SPSS licences

 IBM SPSS Home Premium is once again for sale in the online software store for $40.  

The licenses will expire next August 31st.  The expiration date is determined by SPSS on a calendar basis rather than on a rolling 12 months from purchase basis.

Message from campus IT about SPSS software

Hi all,

Quick reminder, if someone asks you "what software is available on campus?" or "I've heard that I can get my own copy of (whatever software) at a discount" - have a look at the campus ITS software page: http://its.uncg.edu/software/

And now for news from ITS.  Some UNCG patrons get software called SPSS for their own computers.  The SPSS software that these people have installed on their own computers will stop working on Sept 30th.  ITS usually can provide a code that will enable users to renew this sw but they don't have them right now.

If anyone contacts the library b/c their SPSS has stopped working, feel free to have them call (336) 256-TECH for help.

There are alternatives, as listed in the ITS email below.

• Software sales have moved from the ITS Client Services office in Forney to our new online software store - http://its.uncg.edu/software store - run by Kivuto (formerly known as e-Academy).  All of the applications previously sold through our office are now available online.
  

• We have replaced the old SPSS lease system with a new one that uses Qualtrics.  You will find links to that on the SPSS home page - http://its.uncg.edu/Software/Available/SPSS/ .  If you have bookmarked the old lease page, please change it to the new one.
  

• As you may know, licenses expire annually for SPSS, on August 31st, regardless of when the software purchased or installed.  That is determined by SPSS.  Delays on the vendor side with our renewal have resulted in a delay in the generation of new activation codes, a situation which we hope will remedied very soon.

• Until we can access the new codes, there are alternatives to purchasing a new license which will expire in a few weeks, notably remote access via VCL, which we have now been licensed to provide.

• Older versions of SPSS are not compatible with either Windows 8 or the new versions of OSX, sucjh as Mavericks.

Check out the Virtual Computing Lab!

ITS recently added a nice option to the locations where you can access campus licensed software: http://its.uncg.edu/Software/Available/Windows

Virtual Computing Lab lets you log into a "computer" remotely over the internet and use certain applications installed on it. So you can log in from your home computer to use one of the following applications:

• ArcGIS
• AutoCAD
• DreamWeaver
• Illustrator
• InDesign
  EndNote X2
• Office 2007
• Stata
• SAS

You will need to be willing to play around to get this working. And you will need to have a Remote Desktop application installed on your computer.

Here are the log in steps that worked for me from my office on campus:

1) Log into the Virtual Computing Lab site with your Novell/blackboard account: http://its.uncg.edu/vcl
2) Choose New Reservation from the sidebar
3) Pick the software that you want and create a reservation
4) You should see details of your reservation with a "pending" message that eventually turns into a "Connect!" button. Be patient, the first time I tried this it took 10 minutes to get the connect button.
5) Hit the connect button. You'll be shown your username and a temporary password that you'll use to log in and use your reserved software. Hit the button under the login info that says "Get RDP file."
6) An RDP file with the name of the software that you reserved will be put on your desktop. Open the file and use the log in info that you were given to connect. You'll be opening a new window to log in remotely to a computer on campus.
7) If you'd like to end your reservation early so that you can use another application from the Virtual Computing lab, OR if you'd like to keep using your application a little longer, return to the virtual computing lab page: http://its.uncg.edu/vcl

Changes and Enhancements in ITS Managed Computer Labs

ITS has made several major changes to ITS-managed computer labs over the summer. These include measures to enhance services and security in the labs, as well as the reduction of some services in response to North Carolina’s current budget crisis. Please refer to the attached PDF document to learn about the following changes:

• Installation of Two-way Intercoms in ITS Computer Labs

• Also please note that ITS is upgrading and expanding the software available through our “Virtual Computing Lab” (VCL) that allows students and faculty to access some academic software packages remotely (e.g., from home) or over a campus wireless connection. More information on VCL will be sent to this list prior to the semester start.
