Update on SPSS licences

From Janice Tulloss:
IBM SPSS Home Premium is once again for sale in the online software store for $40.

The licenses will expire next August 31st.  The expiration date is determined by SPSS on a calendar basis rather than on a rolling 12 months from purchase basis.

Message from campus IT about SPSS software

Hi all,

Quick reminder, if someone asks you "what software is available on campus?" or "I've heard that I can get my own copy of (whatever software) at a discount" - have a look at the campus ITS software page: http://its.uncg.edu/software/

And now for news from ITS.  Some UNCG patrons get software called SPSS for their own computers.  The SPSS software that these people have installed on their own computers will stop working on Sept 30th.  ITS usually can provide a code that will enable users to renew this sw but they don't have them right now.

If anyone contacts the library b/c their SPSS has stopped working, feel free to have them call (336) 256-TECH for help.

There are alternatives, as listed in the ITS email below.

  • Software sales have moved from the ITS Client Services office in Forney to our new online software store - http://its.uncg.edu/software store - run by Kivuto (formerly known as e-Academy).  All of the applications previously sold through our office are now available online.
  • We have replaced the old SPSS lease system with a new one that uses Qualtrics.  You will find links to that on the SPSS home page - http://its.uncg.edu/Software/Available/SPSS/ .  If you have bookmarked the old lease page, please change it to the new one.
  • As you may know, licenses expire annually for SPSS, on August 31st, regardless of when the software purchased or installed.  That is determined by SPSS.  Delays on the vendor side with our renewal have resulted in a delay in the generation of new activation codes, a situation which we hope will remedied very soon.
  • Until we can access the new codes, there are alternatives to purchasing a new license which will expire in a few weeks, notably remote access via VCL, which we have now been licensed to provide.
  • Older versions of SPSS are not compatible with either Windows 8 or the new versions of OSX, sucjh as Mavericks.
Cheers,
Lea

SPSS leases

I got a question today about getting a student copy of SPSS. It is possible but the info is HARD to find (thx ITS). So, here is the main link they need: https://web.uncg.edu/research-access/secure/spss/spss.asp

There is also information buried within 6-Tech online. I've pulled out the most relevant points.
  1. This lease is available to install SPSS on a home computer belonging to UNCG students, faculty, and staff. Determine version (Most likely Mac or Windows versions)
  2. Please go to the Information Technology Services (ITS) Software Lease System to order your copy.
  3. Print off the indicated pages, and take them with your payment to ITS in 202 Forney Building.
  4. Provide cash, a money order, or a check made payable to UNCG for the SPSS lease.* The cost is $10 per module. Most students will only need the base module for $10, but it goes up to 6 modules for $60. Mark Dixon in Forney will help them with that.
  5. Mail or bring the lease paperwork from step two above and your payment to: Information Technology Services 202 Forney Building, UNCG Greensboro, NC 27402
  6. ITS staff will contact you when the diskettes or CD and the set-up instructions are available. You may install SPSS on one computer per lease. Return the diskettes or CD to ITS when the installation is complete.

These instructions are just for students wanting their own copy. I have SPSS loaded on my computers locally and it is available from the Application Explorer if students want to use it in the library. I can help students with most basic SPSS questions and I have manuals if they need assistance when I'm not here.

BTW, SPSS is a statistical software package.
