PSC 240 with Greg Knehans

The psc 240 students in Greg Knehans class get an extra point on their paper if they visit with me (lynda). My calendar is on the psc guide so you can show them my availability that way (http://uncg.libguides.com/psc).


They are not supposed to wait until the last minute, but if any of them do and insist on counting coming to the desk as a "visit" just let me know their name and the details. I can touch base with them and I have to email Greg about the visit. If the email comes from someone else he may get a bit bugged out.

GSS Data Questions

A patron needed help locating an article that uses GSS data. I tried all sorts of searches using our databases and the GSS site itself. I wasn't able to help the patron. In fact, I received repeated "session has timed out" errors using the GSS site. I eventually referred the patron to his/her professor or classmates, but if we get this question again, here is their assigment:

1.Go to GSS Bibliographic Search Engine.
2.Search for your topic in the keywords box; also select only Chapters in Books, Conference Papers, Cross-National Report, Journal Articles, Project Report, Reports, and Social Change Reports.
3.Locate one of the articles on your topic. (Note: If there are no results from this search engine, you may return to using EBSCO as you did in the last assignment; you will need to make sure that the articles you find in EBSCO are using GSS data for this activity.)

PSC 333 Congress class assignment

The PSC 333 Congress class students will be hitting up the library like mad this weekend and next week. They have a data set due on Monday, Jan 23 and a paper due on Wednesday, Jan 25. They will come to you with a long list of variables for a specific Congressional district. Below are the best books to consult. All are in reference. We can keep them at the desk, but some students may look for them on the shelves so just be aware of that.

CQ Politics in America: JK1010 .P64 2012
Book of the States: JK2403 .B6 2011
America Votes: JK1967 .A8
Almanac of American Politics: JK271 .A530 2012

These books should have all of the data that they need. They can't go to the representative's website. They are supposed to look at the district information itself.

ENG 101: Civil Rights Greensboro Project

Logger Pro

There is an assignment for a social work class that requires Logger Pro software.  The Professor has posted the installation link and password on Blackboard and told the students to go to the library and get help installing here, but it will not install on library computers without a administrator password. It is already installed on the Super Lab computers, however, and the students can do the assignment there.

KIN 351 Assignment

Kinesiology 351, which focuses on the history of sport, has an upcoming assignment that requires students to get signatures from a reference librarian. I've been in contact with the professor for more details, but in the meantime, please sign their documents. If I'm around, you can also feel free to send them to me. They're getting various types of resources on different topics, including print journals, microform newspapers, etc, so they may need some help locating sources as well. Again, feel free to give them my contact information or to call me out to help.

Course Compass

There is a web interface used by some classes called "Course Compass." It's a bit like blackboard, but it is not supported by our library's IT. If a student needs to open an e-book, they need to go to the "solve problems" section and navigate from there to the other pages. There is no way on library computers to directly download the e-book.

Nurse-authored sources (NUR 360)

It's that time again - nursing 360 students are being asked to find nurse-authored sources for their research papers. Updated assignment instructions and librarian recommendations...

Assignment instructions (from NUR 360B course packet-make sure to ask student about requirements before trotting these out, in case the instructor gave additional requirements in person)

• Sources must include, but are not limited to, at least five nursing-authored books, journal articles or texts, though no more than two texts may be used.
• Sources may not be older than 2006.
• Sources that do not meet the criteria may be approved in advance by the classroom faculty.
• The journal “Nursing Times” cannot be included as one of the five main sources.

CINAHL tips

• Remember there is a "nurse-authored" limit in CINAHL
• Only use limits that are absolutely required (don't choose "first author is a nurse" limit unless you're feeling really sadistic)
• If keyword searching doesn't work, set up a subject heading search using CINAHL headings

PubMed - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/limits

• The "Limits" link lets you limit to Journal subset Nursing (not perfect but will cut out lots of junk)
• Quick and dirty check for nurse-author - open a PubMed result and look under the author names for their affiliation. School of Medicine? Probably not a nurse. School of Nursing? Probably a nurse.

Get to full text by typing the journal name into Journal Finder. Look at the first page of the article. Most results will give author credentials next to the name, such as RN, CNM, etc. This page gives a list of common credentials for nurses and other health professionals...sorry for the wikipedia reference!

Need more sources?

The deeper you delve, the more labor-intensive the searching. We do have many nursing books in the basement. Maternal-child nursing books, for instance, are guaranteed to be written by a nurse, though you won't see this info until you look at the text itself.

Refer the patron to Lea if more help is needed.

PSY310 Research Methods Assignemnt

There is some confusion among students in question 11 for this assignment.  The wording of the question is problematical.  They are to find a book chapter that includes information about the effectiveness of relaxation techniques for the treatment of migraine headaches in children. The confusion comes form trying to a chapter on the web. What they need to do, since this is a PsycInfo assignment, is use the limiters in the original search to to set the "Age Groups" menu to all six of the groups (Control Click), then set the "Document Type" menu to "Chapters".  This will change the search to the area they need.  It isn't necessary to change the "Publication Type" menu to "All Books."

SAS 100 Handouts

SAS 100 students may begin coming to the desk this week - they can visit the library for a class assignment. I am placing a folder of handouts for them in the bottom drawer in the low desk - the same drawer where we keep the guest printing card.

All you need to do is provide students with the handout. And, of course, answer any questions they have about library services.

El Salvador Question

A student will be coming in looking for some primary sources for a paper on the elections in El Salvador in 1984 and 1989. She doesn't know Spanish and got confused when I tried to walk her through Lexis Nexis.
