There are two online only sections of NUR 620 students who will be looking for the text of a court case and also "help finding a law or a policy."
These students haven't had library instruction, suggestions for finding sources are here: http://uncg.libguides.com/nur620
I need a court case on...
LexisNexis has the text of court cases from the federal court system and from the appeals and supreme court levels of the state court systems.
NOT ALL CASES ARE AVAILABLE. Trial cases from the state systems aren't in LexisNexis and often aren't available online (at least not for free). Think traffic tickets in Guilford County courts or the first trial for malpractice in another NC County - those cases aren't available in LN or even through the NC judicial system website.
Assignment instructions - Legal Case Paper
Each student will be required to write a 3 pages (maximum) paper not including the references or title page on a legal case that is related to one of the classroom units. Students will be assigned to the units they are to write a legal case paper. The legal cases must have been tried in court within the past 5 years. The papers must include the following:
I. Evolution of case 20%
II. Positions of major parties involved in case 20%
III. If nursing is involved, what is the involvement in the case 15%
IV. Settlement or court decision 15%
V. Student’s preferred solution and rationale
VI. Reference list (APA format) 10%
I need a policy about...
The former gov docs librarian used to wrestle with the nursing faculty and students about "finding a policy."
The NUR 620 libguide has advice (you can look at nursing organization sites for policy/advocacy pages describing certain issues that the group wants to promote) and links to search for bills and laws which are allowed sources.
Assignment instructions - Policy powerpoint
Policy Issue PowerPoint (35%)
Each student will be required to analyze a policy issue and prepare a power point presentation on the analyzed issue. Sources for policy issues are work site, personal experience, literature, etc. You can also get ideas from congressional or senate bills at the federal, national or local level, professional journals, and congressional/judicial news sources. Remember that congressional or senate bills or laws are outcomes of the policy issue and not the policy issue. The following are the sections that must be clearly presented in the power point.
I. Description of the policy issue 10%
II. Scope and severity of the problem that created the policy issue 15%
III. Impact of the policy issue on nursing or health care 15%
IV. Summary of attempts (i.e. bills and/or laws –two to three) to address the policy issue
V. Your critique of how successful the attempts (addressed in IV.) have been in resolving the policy issue. If the attempts have been unsuccessful, your suggestions for resolving the policy issue 20%
VI. References 5%
VII. Maximum of 15 slides not including title page and references 5%
VIII. Professionally done slides as per instruction 5%
Lynda has a broader libguide for Law Resources.
And as always, if you get a nursing question that's too sticky please refer it to me.
Thanks,
Lea
