Citation analysis question LIS 620 Reference class

Quick reminder for interns or anyone who doesn't deal with citation analysis questions very often.

A chat patron asked me whether UNCG has access to Web of Science (no).

S/he then asked for help discovering how many times this article has been cited in the past ten years: Francis T, Jr, Salk JE. A SIMPLIFIED PROCEDURE FOR THE CONCENTRATION AND PURIFICATION OF INFLUENZA VIRUS. Science. 1942

A quick Scopus search for this article can find you one source that cited this article, but Scopus only indexes back to the mid-1990s so not very useful in this case.

But you can search Google Scholar for the Salk article
  • Click the "cited by" link that you'll see under GS results
  • You'll get a list of other sources that Google thinks have cited this article
  • When looking at the list of sources citing back to your article, you can click the date limits to see only recent publications

These results are somewhat fuzzy.

Please note, there is no one tool that will tell you every single time that an item has been cited.

The student was worried about whether s/he was allowed to use Google Scholar for this question, but all 3 of the LIS 620 professors have assured me that GS is fine with them.  They're aware that we don't have WoS.

Thanks,
Lea
