Early View articles

Last week I helped a patron with a sort-of tricky article:

"Feasibility and Effects of a Brief Compassion-Focused Imagery Intervention in Psychotic Patients with Paranoid Ideation: A Randomized Experimental Pilot Study"

When I searched in the catalog it looked like we didn't have access to it.
http://uncg.worldcat.org/oclc/5998597441

When I Googled it, however, a PubMed link came up, with a Full Text link. When I followed that link, it took me to the article, which we actually did have access to, and I was able to download the PDF and send it to the patron. The article link is here:

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/cpp.2003/abstract

The reason it didn't show up in the catalog is because it is an Early View article which was published online before being assigned to an issue. You can read that under the Issue details beside of the journal image.

If it had a volume and issue number, they would be listed here instead.

In this instance, the best thing to do if the patron is off-campus may be to download the article and email it to them. You could also direct them to search the journal title in the A-Z list so they can go through the authentication process and then tell them to click on the "Early View Articles" option on the journal page for these types of articles, but this will vary between different journal providers.

Finally, don't be afraid to Google things. The patron last week told me they had been able to view this article previously and had lost access through the link they had; I assumed that they didn't save a permalink and the URL had expired. So, when I couldn't find a working catalog link, I Googled it. Without that context, I may have found the catalog link, seen that we didn't have access to it, and recommended ILL, which would have been understandable. But before you tell a patron we definitely don't have access to something, maybe give Google a try, just in case.
