Hopefully readers of this blog are excited about daily updates...here is a summary of the ScienceDirect pay per view service that our libraries have with Elsevier.
In the Science Direct database results have either a pdf link or a Get Access link
If patrons click Get Access, it sometimes helps them get full text
If the pop up box has an Order Document button, there is pay per view service available for this item.
The patron can click on Order document, give their UNCG email address, and submit the request. Then library tech services staff get a pdf of the item and email the pdf to the patron. (the patron is not charged any money for this service; expect a response Mon-Fri during the day but there is no exact time or turnaround info).
HOWEVER
If we click the Get Access link
and the following pop up box does NOT have an Order document link:
Then this item is not available through the pay per view service.
Personally, I'm going to search WorldCat Discovery just in case we have this item through a different source.
But our electronic resources librarian Kate Hill advises that we refer the patron to Interlibrary Loan, so maybe going over to WorldCat Discovery to search is a wasted step.
I hope that helps if you get a question from a patron wanting to know how to get an article with a "Get access" link. Sorry the answer is so involved and keeps changing. I believe that this additional content is fantastic, and it's wonderful that our library wants to bring patrons closer to getting it. The user experience side of this service really is terrible. I hope that it continues to improve.
Our electronic resources librarian Kate Hill is going to contact the company to ask "please don't display that Get access link unless our patrons can click it to get access."
Thanks,
Lea Leininger

Hi all,
The Science Direct database has a pay per view service. Our library will buy a copy of a Science Direct article or book chapter for a patron and the patron is not charged.
In Science Direct, when a patron sees a "Get access" link instead of a pdf, they must click on Get access, then on Order document. Then they enter their UNCG email address. Requests are checked by a technical services staff member Mon-Fri during the day.
When I tested this service, full text pdfs were emailed to me in 24 hours. I don't know if others will all have this same experience. The most reliable expectation to set would be - expect a response Monday-Friday.
There are instructions and screenshots on the articles tab of libguides for nutrition, nursing, csd, and gcp. Other Science Librarians and liaison librarians are being made aware of this service.
If you have questions, please let me know and I'll ask those involved in providing this service (it's tech services, not ILL).
If patrons have questions about this service or if you want to check directly with tech services -
phone (336) 256-1210 or email idsdept@uncg.edu
Thanks,
Lea
