GES 432/632/732: Geography of Livable Cities: data project --- now asynchronous

This class is asynchronous for the first time. It has a big local data project. 30 students (10 undergrad, 15 masters, 5 PhD).

I'm not sure how much experience with data they have but will be monitoring the discussions in Canvas. If you get questions from the students, please feel free to try helping them but also feel free to just refer them to https://uncg.libguides.com/ges432 , which includes some slides, videos, APA guides, and contact info for me. (The profile boxes are messed up, not Candace or Sam's fault, I'm trying to get that fixed).

Thank you!  --Steve

Short project description:

Goal 2: Develop a comprehensive Livability Index (20% of final grade for GS, 25% for UG):

Each student will need to select a community and a city for this phase of project and possibly can visit this city at least one time for their research. Students should use existing (secondary) data for developing a livability index based on the livability concept learned in the prior section. Additionally, based on the calculated livability index, students will write (4-5 pages long for UG and 8-12 pages long for Graduate Students) (excluding tables, maps, photos, charts, graphs, references) report to evaluate whether their selected community matches or contradicts the principles of livability. Students may want to address questions like these in their writing:

Approximately what percentage of the population in your selected community and city have access to affordable housing and transportation?

Approximately what percentage of the population in your community and city have access to many destinations by walking, bicycling or public transit? Do mixed-use walkable access neighborhoods really allow equity?

How does your community fit into larger patterns in/equality in the surrounding neighborhoods in this city? Does this community match the criteria of the green cities and smart cities & communities’ concept?
